TITLE:

Assistant Professor/Assistant Scientist or Associate Professor/Associate Scientist (25% Academic Programs, 75% Agricultural Research Center) in Plant Biology (Search No. 4758).  

LOCATION:  Pullman, Washington

Washington State University (WSU) is a comprehensive land-grant research institution co-located in Pullman and Spokane, with additional campuses in the Tri-Cities (Richland, Pasco and Kennewick) and Vancouver.  There are ten colleges and a graduate school.  More than 18,600 undergraduate and graduate students are served by the Pullman campus.  WSU offers some 245 fields of study including more than 150 majors plus many minors, options and certificate programs.   Bachelor’s degrees are available in all major areas, with master’s and doctoral degrees available in most. LINE OF RESPONSIBILITY:

This position reports administratively to the Director of the Institute of Biological Chemistry.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Create a dynamic, well-funded program in a fundamental area of modern plant science with particular emphasis on studying plant biology using innovative approaches that incorporate biochemistry/biophysics, structural biology, or systems biology. The candidate is expected to rapidly develop a highly competitive research program and contribute substantially to the missions of the Institute of Biological Chemistry and College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences. 

General responsibilities include:

  • Develop and maintain a vigorous research program supported by extramural funding.
  • Train graduate students.
  • Participate in teaching graduate courses in the area of modern plant biology.
  • Work effectively with individuals and groups with a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies in a global environment.
  • Participate in committee service at the department, college, and/or university level.
  • The successful applicant will be expected to conduct an approved program of research consistent with the missions of the WSU Agricultural Research Center.

RANK/SALARY:

Full-time, tenure track position; 9-month appointment, as Assistant Professor/Assistant Scientist or Associate Professor/Associate Scientist.  Competitive salary commensurate with qualifications.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent.
  • One year postdoctoral experience by start date.

Desired for Assistant Professor:

  • Evidence of quality and quantity of research accomplished in a fundamental area of modern plant science.
  • Expertise in using biochemical, biophysical and structural biology approaches to investigate biological problems.
  • Coherent research plan that incorporates biochemical, biophysical and structural biology approaches to investigate important questions in plant science.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Additional Qualifications Desired for Associate Professor:

  • Record of mentoring skills in training students, postdocs and others.
  • Demonstration of ability to establish an independent research program.  Evidence can include publications and grant support.
  • Demonstration of emerging national and international reputation as a leader in area of research (publications, presentations, review panels, etc.).
